The Floating Obelisk: A 7th Level Adventure for 5th Edition

Long ago, somewhere in the swamps of southwestern Arden, lay a village whose name has been lost to time. Centuries prior, a woman wandered into the village, her mind wracked with madness. The villagers tried to help her, but unfortunately, she possessed a great power that she could not control. The magic that flowed through her veins lashed out at anyone who got close, and soon the village was torn asunder by her uncontrollable arcane abilities. Overnight, the village was abandoned and those who called it home were scattered to the winds.

When the woman finally gained control of herself, she found the death and destruction she had caused all around her. Fearing what she might do, she summoned the rubble and remains of the village and encased herself in stone before sinking her rocky tomb beneath the swampy water. There she would remain in stasis for centuries, lost to the world above. Time ticked on and nature slowly retook the site of the old village.

One day, while traveling through the swamp, a lone mage accidentally stumbled upon the site of the old village. Something about it unnerved him, and he cast a ritual to see what once had been there. When his spell was complete, he saw the obelisk pulsing beneath the swampy waters and felt the stirring of the woman inside.  As the obelisk rose up from the watery depths, the mage fled in fear. Now, the stone monument vibrates, hovering just above the water's surface. The arcane energy flowing from it poisoning everything it touches. Unless someone can destroy it or disable it, its magical corruption will continue to spread.
