Forgotten Bones: A 5th Level Adventure for 5th Edition

Long ago, before Dennmarsh was established and grew into the grand city it is today, there was a dwarven outpost called Kharazthunn in its place. Settled centuries before the founding of Dennmarsh, it flourished for a time. Eventually though, a wizened hag named Megara found the outpost and summoned forth a deluge of dark creatures to invade it. The dwarves fought a desperate battle, but in the end, they were overrun. Megara and her minions imprisoned the survivors and tortured them until their forms twisted and they became something... darker. The region might have fallen under her sway had Brunhilde, goddess of the dwarves, not intervened. The goddess, upon seeing her followers warped and twisted, sent a powerful earthquake to collapse the entrance to the outpost and bury the hag and her minions beneath the earth forever. Upon realizing her fate, Megara cried out and cursed the gods. Refusing to accept defeat, she went about stitching together various abominations to try and escape her stone tomb. When none were able to extricate her from beneath the surface, she put a plan into motion that might one day get her her revenge. She foresaw that one day, the races of men would come and settle this land. They would dig deep the foundations of their houses, and eventually she'd be able to break through the thinned barriers that kept her sealed away. Megara died of old age before this could come to pass, but before her death, she enacted rituals to ensure her minions would sow destruction once freed. When the Uhtgard family dug out a long forgotten chamber to convert into a wine cellar, it tripped Megara's magical wards and her plans began to unfold. On the night of Castor Uhtgard's annual gala, the first step was set into motion as a massive troll-like creature burst forth from its resting place, opening the floodgates and allowing the darkness inside to begin to spread out. Unless someone can enter the old outpost and defeat the empowered minions inside, darkness will descend upon Dennmarsh.
